5" Precision Pro Plate for 15 mm BigFoots
The RUPES Precision Pro 5" backing plate (980.720) is the Version 2, 125 mm hook and loop plate for the 15 mm BigFoot polishers: the cordless HLR15 iBrid and the corded LHR15 Mark V. A 5-inch plate on a 15 mm orbit is the setup detailers reach for on bumpers, pillars, mirrors, and tight curved panels where a 6-inch pad can't sit flat. For Version 2, RUPES moved to a polyurethane interface heat-welded directly to the hook and loop, fitted stronger hook and loop material, and reworked the plate's geometry and balance.
If you are replacing the original Precision Pro (980.710), this is the current part for the same machine. If you run an older LHR15 Mark III, RUPES does not list the Precision Pro for it, and that polisher takes the LHR15III 5" backing plate (980.027N). Both plates measure 5 inches, so check the model on your polisher's label before you order.
What Makes it Great:
🔥 Heat-Welded Construction: RUPES heat-welds the polyurethane interface directly to the hook and loop on Version 2, and says the result is a more solid, stable plate that holds up longer.
🎯 Grip That Holds Up: Upgraded hook and loop material keeps 5-inch pads locked on through curves and edges, where the pad spends more time tilted, and keeps that grip longer.
🌀 Tuned for a 15 mm Orbit: RUPES reworked the plate's geometry and balance for the 15 mm BigFoot, so the machine runs smooth and the pad stays easy to control.
🔩 Shared by the HLR15 and LHR15 Mark V: One part number covers the cordless and corded 15 mm BigFoot, which keeps parts inventory simple for shops running both.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the Precision Pro 5" backing plate fit an LHR15 Mark III?
RUPES does not list it for the Mark III. The LHR15 Mark III takes the LHR15III 5" backing plate, RUPES part 980.027N.
Is the 980.720 a replacement for the original 980.710 Precision Pro plate?
Yes. The original 980.710 was the HLR15's plate, and RUPES lists the Version 2 plate (980.720) for the HLR15 and the LHR15 Mark V.
Should I use a 5 inch or 6 inch backing plate?
The polisher decides. RUPES 15 mm machines (HLR15, LHR15 Mark V) take the 5-inch plate, and 21 mm machines (HLR21, LHR21 Mark V) take the 6-inch Precision Pro, part 981.720. A 5-inch setup reaches tighter areas and curves, and a 6-inch setup covers flat panels faster.
Why does my polisher vibrate more than it used to?
The usual causes are a pad mounted off-center, a worn pad, or a worn or damaged backing plate. Re-center the pad first. If the vibration stays, check the plate for cracks, warping, or hook and loop that no longer grips.
