The Buff and Shine extender bolt (part 1400) is a hex coupling with a female 5/8"-11 thread on one end and a male 5/8"-11 stud on the other, and Buff and Shine sells it as its double-sided pad extender. It threads onto a rotary buffer's spindle and becomes a new mounting point for the pad, set farther out from the tool. Double-sided wool pads need that distance. They have no backing plate, so without the bolt the rear face runs right against the polisher's gear head. On a threaded rotary backing plate, the same added length moves the tool body farther from the panel.

Why does a double-sided buffing pad need an extender bolt?

The pad has a female 5/8"-11 hub through its center and nothing behind it. Threaded straight onto a rotary, its back face sits against the gear head, and on many machines the spindle is longer than the hub, so the tip can come through the working face and mark the finish. The extender bolt fixes both problems.

How do you mount a double-sided pad with an extender bolt?

Unplug the polisher, hold the spindle lock, and spin the bolt's female end onto the spindle by hand until it seats. Thread the pad's hub onto the bolt's stud and snug it by hand. To flip the pad, hold the spindle lock and unscrew only the pad. If the bolt turns with it, hold the hex with a wrench.

Can you use an extender bolt with a rotary backing plate?

Yes. A plate with a female 5/8"-11 hub threads onto the bolt's stud just as it threads onto a spindle. The added length helps when the tool body would otherwise touch trim or a neighboring panel.

Does the extender bolt fit M14 or dual action polishers?

No. Both ends are 5/8"-11. M14 rotaries need a metric thread, and Buff and Shine makes a separate extender for them, part 1414. Dual action polishers mount their plates on a much smaller thread, and double-sided pads are made for rotary use.
