2" Rigid Backing Plate for Tight-Spot Polishing

The Buff & Shine 2" rigid backing plate (part URO258) is a J-hook plate for 2-inch hook and loop pads, with a female 5/8"-11 threaded insert in the back. Buff & Shine builds it for rotary polishers, so it threads straight onto a 5/8"-11 spindle, and the SP5814 drill shank adapter turns it into a drill attachment. A 2-inch pad reaches the places a 3-inch pad would overrun: door handle cups, the gaps around emblems and badges, grille slats, mirror housings, and the narrow strip between two body lines. Because the plate does not flex, the cut stays on the defect instead of spilling onto trim or the next panel.

For a wider repair with the same thread and adapter, step up to the 3" rigid backing plate (part 358). Buff & Shine's 1" rigid plate goes the other way, down to single nibs and pinpoint defects. Running a RUPES IBRID Nano? That machine takes its own RUPES 2" IBRID Nano backing plate, not this one. The Buff & Shine plate is for detailers and body shops finishing small sanding marks and touch-up blends with a drill or a 5/8"-11 rotary.

What Makes it Great:

📐 No-Flex Body: The plate holds a small pad dead flat under hand pressure, which keeps a 2-inch contact patch from rocking onto its edge in a recess.

🔩 Female 5/8"-11 Insert: The same thread as Buff & Shine's 1" and 3" rigid plates, so one SP5814 adapter or one rotary spindle runs all three sizes.

⚡ 3,000 RPM Max on a Drill: Buff & Shine lists 3,000 RPM as the top speed with the SP5814, which covers the range a corded or cordless drill turns.

🖐️ J-Hook Face: Hooks shaped like a J grab the loop backing on a 2-inch pad and hold it centered, even at drill speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 2 inch backing plate used for?

Polishing or compounding areas too small for a 3-inch pad: door handle cups, emblem and badge outlines, grille slats, mirror housings, and narrow strips between body lines. It also blends out a single sanding mark without touching the paint around it.

Does a 2 inch backing plate fit the RUPES IBRID Nano?

Not this one. The IBRID Nano uses RUPES's own 2" plate, a factory part made for that machine. The Buff & Shine 2" plate threads onto a 5/8"-11 spindle or the SP5814 drill adapter.

Should I use a 1, 2, or 3 inch backing plate?

Match the plate to the repair. A 1" plate is for single nibs and pinpoint defects, a 2" plate for recesses and narrow trim lines, and a 3" plate for spot repairs where you want more coverage per pass. All three Buff & Shine rigid plates share the 5/8"-11 thread and the SP5814 drill adapter.
