It Starts with the Right Tools
Before you begin, gather the following items:
- A Glass specific microfiber cloth (Lint Free).
- A Spray Bottle of Glass Cleaner (Ready to Use or Diluted with Deionized Water.
- A squeegee. (Optional)
- A sponge or scrubbing pad.
Step-by-Step Process:
1. Prep the Surface:
Avoid cleaning windows in direct sunlight. A proper prepped window cleaning surface is cool to the touch. DO NOT let the chemicals dry on the surface.
2. Remove Dust and Debris:
Spray the surface down and use the sponge to scrub away any dirt on the window. Squeegee or wipe away the excess.
3. The Secret Method:
One dirt is removed give the surface on more spray and wipe down with a microfiber cloth. Here you want to go left to right wiping patterns on the interior window and up and down patterns on the exterior. This way if you miss any spot on the window you will know which side it is on. If you squeegee make sure to wipe the squeegee blade dry and start at the top corner of the window. Pull the squeegee across the window in a smooth, even motion. Wipe the blade with a clean cloth after each pass. Overlap the previous stroke slightly to avoid streaks. Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe down the edges and sills of the window to ensure no excess moisture remains. ALWAYS MAKE SURE TO ROLL DOWN THE WINDOW TO CLEAN THAT AREA AS WELL. Sorry for the caps, but that is one of the most missed areas in window cleaning.
Step back and examine the window from different angles to ensure there are no streaks, smudges, or missed spots and you my friend have learned how to get that streak-free window shine.
So What if There are Still Streaks?
Not to worry, we aren't going to give you the secret formula and then not explain the ways it can be mistaken or "messed up". There are a couple things to look out for that will yield streaks on windows even using the information above. For example,
Contaminated Towels (Cross-Contamination): Towels that have previously been used with cleaning agents, polishes, or other substances can carry residue. When these contaminated towels are used for window cleaning, they can transfer these residues onto the glass. This can result in streaks, hazy spots, and a lack of clarity on the window surface.
Also, towels that shed lint or fibers can leave behind tiny particles on the window. These particles can get trapped in the cleaning solution or on the glass itself, leading to visible streaks and an uneven appearance.
Towels washed with fabric softeners or certain detergents can leave behind a residue that interferes with the cleaning process. This residue can cause streaks and smears on windows.
Towels with rough edges, frayed fibers, or hard particles embedded in the fabric can scratch the window surface, especially if applied with pressure. Scratches can create a distorted view and compromise the appearance of the window.
Improper Cleaning Solution: Cleaning solution not intended for windows, or diluted with hard water can have adverse affects on the windows.
Improper Environment: Cleaning windows in to hot or too cold environments can also have adverse effects on the windows or cause hazing and washout. Best avoid cleaning in direct sunlight unless you get a glass cleaner that is made for any warm temperature like our Orange Reflection Glass Cleaner.
To wrap it all up, getting that streak-free window requires the right tools, techniques, and attention to detail. By following this guide, we hope that you'll be able to enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you can get the perfect window, every time, and your customers will enjoy the results as well!
