Factory LH19E 5" Backing Plate for Rotary Correction

The RUPES LH19E 5" backing plate (part 982.500) is the factory hook and loop plate for the North American RUPES LH19E rotary polisher, the plate the LH19E/US ships with. It has a female 5/8" thread, and RUPES prints that size on the plate beside a 4,000 RPM rating. LH19E models sold in Europe and Australia use an M14 spindle and a different plate, part 992.500, so a polisher bought overseas needs that part instead. Run it with RUPES 5-inch rotary pads, which have a 150mm face that covers the 125mm plate, in wool, foam, or waffle foam. Body shops and detailers pick the 5-inch size for spot repairs, rocker panels, A-pillars, and bumper ends: areas a 6.5-inch setup would overhang.

Mounting takes no wrench: with the polisher unplugged, press the spindle lock button and spin the plate onto the shaft by hand. Press the lock only once the spindle has stopped completely: RUPES warns that locking a moving spindle can break the gearbox. Every other replacement for the machine is in the LH19E parts collection, including the 6.5" plate for full-panel work. Comparing it to the Buff & Shine Semi-Flex 5" rotary backing plate? The FAQ below covers the difference.

What Makes it Great:

🔩 North American 5/8" Thread: Matches the LH19E/US spindle, and the thread size printed on the plate tells it apart from the M14 version sold overseas.

⚡ 4,000 RPM Rating: The printed rating sits well above the LH19E's top speed, so the plate runs inside its limit at every setting on the dial.

📏 Cooler Pad Edge: A 150mm pad's working edge travels about 17% slower than a 180mm pad's at the same dial setting, which keeps heat down on body lines and thin paint.

🖐️ Polishing Pads Only: RUPES marks the plate for polishing pads only. Wool, foam, and waffle pads press onto the hook face, and swapping one for another takes no tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thread is the RUPES LH19E backing plate?

The North American LH19E takes this 982.500 plate, which has a female 5/8" thread. LH19E models sold in Europe and Australia use an M14 spindle and the 992.500 plate. The two threads don't interchange, so check the part number or the thread before you order.

Should I use a 5 inch or 6.5 inch backing plate on the LH19E?

Use the 5-inch plate for spot repairs, bumpers, pillars, and tight curves, where a smaller pad stays on the area and runs cooler at the edge. Use the 6.5-inch plate with 180mm pads on hoods, roofs, and doors, where more pad per pass finishes the panel faster.

What is the difference between the RUPES LH19E 5" plate and the Buff & Shine Semi-Flex 5"?

Both are 5-inch hook and loop rotary plates for 5-inch pads. The RUPES 982.500 is the factory plate for the LH19E. The Buff & Shine 558Y has a 5/8"-11 J-hook face and a rigid-and-flexible build for 5/8"-11 rotaries in general. On an LH19E, the RUPES plate is the direct match, and RUPES's LH19E manual says the warranty ends if non-original parts are used.
