Handheld Paint Inspection Light

Finding paint defects is about the angle of the light, not the amount of it. Swirls, holograms, micro-marring, and sanding marks only appear when light strikes the surface at a low, raking angle while you view from a different one. That is something only a handheld can do, because it decouples where the light comes from and where your eyes are. Cycling through color temperatures adds the other half: a panel that reads clean under daylight-range light will often give up swirls under something warmer, which is why a correction that looked finished in the bay shows marks in a customer's driveway.

It is built to work several ways. The adjustable body, integrated hang hook, and magnetic base let you stick it to a fender or hang it in a door jamb for hands-free work, and the removable diffuser softens the beam when you want to judge gloss and surface evenness instead of hunting fine scratches. A separate integrated flood LED turns it into a general work light for everything that is not inspection. USB-C charging with a magnetic dock means it lives charged on the bench. Useful through paint correction, coating installation, and final walkaround. For hands-free inspection while both hands are working, the inspection headlamp is the companion piece. What Makes it Great:

šŸ“ You Control the Angle: The defining advantage of a handheld. Hold the light low across a panel while you look from above, which is the only way fine swirls reveal themselves.

šŸŒ”ļø Switchable Color Temperatures: Different temperatures surface different defects. Changing the light beats owning three of them.

šŸŒ«ļø Diffuser Included: A hard beam finds scratches, a diffused one judges gloss and evenness. Both matter and you get both.

🧲 Magnet, Hook, and Flood LED: Stick it, hang it, or switch to flood mode. It inspects paint and then goes back to being a shop light.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you actually use an inspection light to find swirls?

Rake the light, do not point it. Hold the light close to the panel at a shallow angle so the beam skims across the surface rather than hitting it straight on, then position your head so you are viewing from a different angle than the light is coming from. Defects become visible in that mismatch, because a scratch catches light differently than the surrounding clear coat. Shining a light perpendicular to a panel and looking straight down the same line is the one approach that reveals almost nothing. Work in a dim area, move the light continuously rather than holding it still, and change your viewing angle as you go.

What is the diffuser attachment for?

It changes what you can see. A bare LED is close to a point source, which produces hard, high-contrast reflections that are ideal for picking out fine scratches and swirl marks. Putting a diffuser over it turns that point into a broader, softer source, which is better for reading overall gloss, surface evenness, orange peel, and how a finish will look under real-world light. Neither setting is better. Inspect with the bare beam, then confirm the finish with the diffuser on.

Handheld or headlamp?

Buy on when you need the light. A handheld wins at inspection, because you can put the light at a raking angle independent of where your eyes are, which a head-mounted light cannot do by definition. A headlamp wins during the work, when both hands are committed to an applicator and a towel and you need to see what you are doing right now. If you are only buying one and your main problem is finding defects rather than working around them, take the handheld.

What is the flood LED for, as opposed to the inspection beam?

Two different jobs in one body. The inspection beam is focused and directional, which is what makes raking light work. The flood LED throws wide, even light for everything else: lighting a footwell, seeing into an engine bay, working in a dim corner of a shop, or just finding something you dropped. Switching to flood turns an inspection tool into a work light, which is why this ends up being the light people actually carry.

Can I use it hands-free?

Yes, which is part of what makes it versatile. The magnetic base holds it to a fender, hood edge, or any steel panel, and the hang hook lets you suspend it from a door frame or an open hood. That covers the cases where you want fixed light on an area while both hands work, without needing a second light. What it cannot do hands-free is follow your eyes, so for inspection while moving, you are back to holding it.
